Unit 3910
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor make up
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only); Material: re-used superstructure; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 1.26 m E-W x 0.82 m N-S x 0.02 m deep
Discussion: Spread of grey ashy material located to N and W of platform F.287 and partly lapping up over the feature. Up to 2 cm thick at the E end where it overlies mixed brown sediment with occasional plaster frags. W of this plaster lined mudbricks show through, though also underlying brown material. To W of this clay material then very mixed compact layered ash deposit. (3910) may actually be an upper layer of this compact deposit but as it continues eastwards as a single layer it is recorded as a single unit.
(3910) appears to be the same grey deposit as (3913) in Filbert to the W and (3355)=Cuthbert to the NW, though (3355) is significantly less ashy with fewer charcoal inclusions.
Recognition: Layer of dark grey-ashy material observed following removal of (3647), floor make up to N and W of platform F.287.
Definition: Surface clearly defined as clearly grey and very ashy unlike underlying sediment, basal boundary less clear, especially to the W.
Execution: Trowel, leaf trowel, from E end.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: firm
Colour: 2.5 Y 6/1 grey
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: masive
Inclusions: 5% small-medium bone frags, 2% medium pot, 1% small to medium obsidian flakes, 1% shell frags
Post-depositional Features: small roots, salts
Basal Boundary: clear/smooth/anthropogenic at the E end, becoming less clear to the W
