Unit 3913
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor make up
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only); Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 1.36 E-W x 0.9 m N-S x 10 mm deep
Discussion: Deposit of grey ashy material, possibly floor make up underlying (3656) in Filbert. Appears to be the same as (3910) to the E and (3355) to the N though more ashy than the latter. For the most part it overlies a very mixed deposit the boundary between the two being slightly unclear as there are some similar elements in botrh. In the NE of the square however it clearly underlies a brown silt and could be followed as a single layer from this point.
Recognition: Layer of grey ashy material revealed after removal of (3656) and appearing to correspond with similar material in the square to the E (Egbert).
Definition: Top surface clearly defined by change from overlying unit.
Execution: Trowel, leaf trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: firm
Colour: 2.5 Y 6/1 grey
Texture: silt loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: 5% charcoal flecks
Post-depositional Features: none apparent though partly truncated by later feature
Basal Boundary: clear/smooth/anthropogenic in NE of square but less clear elsewhere due to a mixed underlying deposit, part of which is similar to (3913), similar to base of (3910)
