Unit 3929
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: occupation/oven debris
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: 1.23 E-W x 1.2 N-S x 0.025
Discussion: (3929) represents a deposit of charcoal rich, ashy material lying directly above floor material (3934). To the E it was extremely thin in places, and homogenous. To the W, where the floor beneath it was worn through, it was more substantial and mixed. Its high hackberry content and the presence of red ochre flecks throughout the deposit were distinctive. Where it ran into a baulk to the W, it contained a thick lense of homogenous sand. This was removed as part of the same unit as the deposit beneath was very similar to that above in composition, again containing red ochre flecks and lots of hackberries. The deposit seems to represent a very rich layer of occupation debris in the S half of space 117. Once again its high charcoal content suggests that the activities that it represents were related to one of the ovens nearby (F.269 + F.293) to the E. The organic material within it could imply that some sort of food processing was also being carried out in the area. X1 appeared to be the broken off end of a large flint tool (but listed as obsidian?) The flakes associated with it might suggest that some sort of flint working was being carried out in the area. Alternatively they could all have been part of the sweeping out of the ovens to the E (!)
Recognition: An ashy exposure covering most of the area between the mid N-S baulk and the W baulk. This was dusty in places and more substantial + organic elsewhere.
Definition: See A.
Execution: Trowel/leaf trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: friable
Colour: 2.5 Y 6/2 light brownish grey/2.5 Y 5/3 light olive brown
Texture: ashy silt/sand

Inclusions: 10% charcoal (flecks, small, medium and large pieces), 2% hackberries, <2% plaster flecks, <2% phytoliths, occasional obsidian flakes, <2% red ochre throughout, <2% bone/tooth
Post-depositional Features: root intrusion and salts
Basal Boundary: a clear/distinct basal boundary to the E, overlying a smooth/even surface; to the W more difficult to define; the deposit contained a thick lense of sand, which was removed as part of the unit and overlay a variety of floor/occupation deposits beneath

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
