Discussion: 4978 was a compound layer of floors and occupation debris in the south east corner of building 23/ space178. It underlay the thin partition 4970 that separated 'clean' and 'dirty' areas in the southern half of the building and was probably contemporary to the use of the ovens F533 and F534. The layer was fairly thin to the west and may only have incorporated a single floor layer and its associated occupation debris. To the east, a large area of mixed clayey material formed a thick levelling deposit directly beneath this floor.

Consistency: mainly friable, but firm towards ther east

Colour: varied between lenses - deep greyish-brown over much of the area, mottled yellowish-brown to the east, pale ashy grey in places and patches of pale greyish white

Texture: Varied between lenses - mainly ashy clay-silt and clay to the east

Bedding: compound layered

Inclusions: varied between lenses - included charcoal, plaster, shell, obsidian, bone, phytoliths, clay and coprolite

Post-depositional Features: heavy salt encrustation in places

Basal Boundary: sharp, smooth and distinct, sloping from south to north and from west to east

At the flotation sample (sample #2) diagnostic pieces (two lumbars, sacrum, a unfused first phalanx, a metatarsal, a metapodial, ribs, fragments of long bones and a piece of skull, and some teeth fragments) can be observed as much as little fragmented pieces.
