Discussion: 4981 was a compound layer of mixed plaster and reddish-brown silty material which appear to represent either truncated floors or floor make-up/ packing above the oven F539 against the southern wall of building 23/ space 178. A small part of the renmant superstructure of the oven may also have been removed with the floors, since it was heavily truncated and little different in appearance to the material of the floors themselves. Where the deposit ran up towards the basin F521 to the west, it appeared to foorm a clearly plastered surface or floor, however this was not the case elsewhere. It contained fragments of oven debris and was probably the first floor surface made in the area following the use of the oven F539 which it overlay, but it was clearly different to the dirty floor layers to the west of it. The deposit was excavated to an arbritrary section line along its western edge to 'fast-track' the excavation of the area to the east. The equivalent layer to the west of this section was 4998.
