Unit 8862
Category: Cut dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: pit cut
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Dimensions: N-S 2 m; E-W 1.5 m
Discussion: See unit sheet 8861.
Further investigation showed that E part of the pit was filled with construction rubble (U. 8863). Layered with midden (U. 8859, 8864). The relationship of ''the fill'' (U. 8861) and the units mentioned above is not clear but my guess is that they are either contemporary or 8861 is later.
At that stage it is also clear that the pit was located entirely in the N or ''cul de sac'' part of sp. 226, the part in which the deposits differ from the ''proper'' midden at the ''proper'' street (S part of sp. 226). These could have been nivelation layers on some kind of activity area since they are much more compact and homogenious, and resemble packing deposits in houses (although with a higher quantity of middeny material).
So, to summarize, E part of the pit was filled with midden as well as construction rubble and the proper fill (8861); all mixed but to an extent layered with middenm on top, some fill in the middle and the construcrion rubble at the bottom. A patch of white plaster sits at the bottom of the pit, at the central part. It appears that the pit remained opened for some time.
