Unit 2840
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Midden Layer
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: The layer wasn't that easy to distinguish. Contains quite big amounts of animal bone, clay ball pieces, and charcoal which are actually expected to get within a midden layer.
Note that the Archive sample was not taken.
Recognition: Recognized by a raised layer within space 115. The layer has a mixture of color, and is darken than the rest of the midden fill.
Definition: Defined by excavation to the north, and a gradually disappearing slope to the south.
Execution: Started from the south-west, worked north and east by trowelling.
Condition: Because of being the first layer being excavated after winter, it has had soil disturbance and the soil was very dry.
Consistency: Firm and dense on the east, loose on the west.
Colour: Light yellowish brown (page 2.5 Y)
Texture: Gritty clay
Bedding: None
Inclusions: Less than 2% phytoliths, less than 2% charcoal.
Post-depositional Features: Cracks and roots and insect disturbance.
