Unit 3106
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.52 x 0.27 x 0.06
Discussion: (3106) represents three courses of brick in what was left of wall [61]. They were the second brick type in this wall and the arrangement of these and other sandier bricks (2877) had a decorative appearance. This is difficult to confirm as the majority of the wall had already been removed.
Recognition: Dark, blocky material, clearly different to the other brick and mortar in wall [61].
Definition: Defined by colours and texture and cracking/salt encrustations between it and the surrounding mortar
Execution: Pick and trowel
Condition: Slightly damp, hot and sunny and still clammy
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Brown 10 YR 5/3
Texture: Clayety silt
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Very few (<2% charcoal)
Post-depositional Features: Some salt encrustation and animal burrowing
Basal Boundary: Clear, sharp, constructional basal boundary prominently marked with a smooth and level interface between it and the unit (3112) beneath
