Description: Surface: Overlapping with the dense area of phytolith is an area of puddling with fairly deep cracks and lumps/pitting. The phytolith spread follows the contours of the surface. The surface slopes clearly from E to W, being lower in the W, and also downwards from N to S.
Basal boundary: as the boundary seems to be largely defined by a spread of phytoliths, the type of boundary depends on the nature of the depositional event leading to the spread of phytoliths-intentional- to create a surface/dumped-anthropogenic, or blown in and natural. The distinctness varies from very sharp in the area of intense phytoliths to abrupt where the phytoliths are more faint. The contrast is generally prominent, especially in the areas of phytoliths. See discussion of distinctiveness + contrast of unit 2845. The form varies from irregular in the puddled area, to wavy in the W and the far E parts.
In the NW area, N of cut 3131, deposit is of more clayey, dense/firm consistency. Inferred basal boundary, less well defined.
Recognition: Characterised mainly by a spread of phytoliths, which alerted us to an "activity abuse" horizon which was then easy to chase due to its compact nature. This varied from intense and occurring in a yellow deposit, to dense white patch, a patch in black material, and other more sparse areas of phytoliths. The E end of the surface however did not have any phytolith spreads. In most areas the surface, once detected, was revealed easily, by pecking off the overlying layer with a trowel.
Definition: To the E surface defined by edge of excavation + poss. extended onto 117, to the S abutting a wall, to the W by the edge of excavation, to the N by midden section under wall F.52, (no it runs below level VII wall SF)
Execution: Initially by toothpick and leaftrowel in the dense area of phytoliths (see sketch) and then a trowel was used.
