Unit 3611
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: In situ fire place,Redeposited ash
Data Category Information: Description: fire spots (non-structured); Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: c. 0.2m x 0.2m x 50mm thick
Discussion: Unlike larger 'fireplace' just North (3612), the unit under discussion doesn't go down to an underlying scorched horizon but the very thin layer of burnt material lifts off onto an unburnt surface of unit 3623 suggests that it represented an isolated, short lived burning event, and may have been a fall-out from the larger and longer term fire place to the North.
Latter would be more likely, as no area of associated scorching. This re-deposited ash could have originated either from 3612 just North or from large fire 3365 both of which are located at the same horizon.
Recognition: Area of burning/ash easily distinguishable from surrounding unit 3375 which the ashy layer fades off.
