Unit 3916
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: occupation debris above walls
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 1.10 E-W x 0.90 N-S x 0.01
Discussion: (3916) represents several skims of ashy material, organic residue and blocky clay which overlay what appeared to be a continous floor (3922). The majority of the unit consisted of a fine skim of orange organic material beneath ash. To the W this lay above a charcoal rich, ashy layer to the S, a lense of blocky clay material to the N and an area with a higher concentration of plaster 'patches' (see sketch plan). Each of those seem to have been the product of some sort of occupation activities that took place before the overlying plaster rim F.289 was put in place. These may be related to what was going on in the nearby ovens (F.269?) and could be food related because of the high organic content of them??
Recognition: An ashy organic layer directly beneath (3912) at its E end and extending westwards from here. To the W it was removed with other skims of material.
Definition: Defined by material difference and salt encrustation in places.
Execution: Leaf trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: firm
Colour: ashy material 2.5 Y 6/2 light brownish grey; organic material 10 YR 6/8 brownish yellow
Texture: ashy silt loam/pure organic residue
Bedding: compound layered
Inclusions: 8% charcoal, 2% phytoliths, occasional hackberries, 5% plaster, 20% organic residue, occasional tiny pebbles/shell flecks, lenses of blocky clay (N) + ashier material next to the W baulk
Post-depositional Features: heavily salt encrusted
Basal Boundary: for most of its extent the basal boundary was clear/distinct/anthropogenic; the surface beneath was smooth + level sloping down from N to S (especially to the W)

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
