Unit 3922
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only); Material: pise-like; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 1.3 m N-S x 1.25 m E-W x 0.01
Discussion: (3922) represents a fairly homogenous layer of brownish grey 'floor' material which covered a large area of the S half of space 117 and was cut by post retreival pit (2712). According to the composition of this material and that underlying it, it seems to be the same floor as that found to the E of the baulk at its E extent. This relationship is hard to judge because of its truncation both by oven debris from a later oven and over cutting of the unit in 1997. To the N, as with the layers above, it slopes upwards forming a 'sunken' area' around the oven features with which these floors seem to be associated. It is interesting that they chose to floor this area with a 'dirty' grey/brown material rather than purer white plaster, perhaps in concession to its 'dirty' usage?
Recognition: A fairly uniform brown layer which covered a large area beneath (3916).
Definition: Defined by salt encrustation in places.
Execution: Leaf trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: firm
Colour: 2.5 Y 7/1 light grey
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: occasional phytoliths + charcoal flecks, 2% plaster patches
Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation
Basal Boundary: sharp/distinct; (3922) overlay a mixed ashy layer for most of its extent which was clearly definable, the surface between these was smooth and level

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
