Discussion: Small patch of compound layered ashy material below oven debris to NW of oven = Filbert, filling a shallow, round? depression + continuing into baulk. Some material presumably also (3917) had been previously removed from the N part of the depression.
(3917) appears to possibly be the burnt contents of a small hearth. Further cleaning around (and removal of the ****ing baulk) should throw more light on this.
Removal of the ****ing baulk revealed this indeed to be a small hearth (F.293) until (3917) as basal and (2745) as upper fills. Partly truncated during 1997 season, Doh!!
Recognition: Small patch of grey material (part of which appears to have been previously removed) below (2795) oven debris and partly infilling a smooth depression.
