Unit 3923
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: fire debris
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 0.62 m N/S x 0.21 m E/W x 0.01 m thick max.
Discussion: Ashy layer, fire debris associated with ashy layers beneath F.289 to E. Probably same as (3916) ash layer directly beneath rim of F.289 although impossible to be sure as baulk in the way and there are many ash layers in this area. It seems that this area was used as a 'dirty area' before F.289 also. This deposit may be debris from fire installation to NW.
Recognition: Seen when floor layer (3680) removed as a fairly compact, light to mid grey ashy silt deposit with frequent white salts + frequent charcoal. Abutts wall of F.290 and slopes down from this towards SE, where it tapers.
Definition: Continues into L.O.E (baulk) in E, stops in W half way up walls/rim of F.290. Tapers and stops to SW where overlies brown silt layer.
Execution: Leaf.
Condition: Hot.
Consistency: fairly compact
Colour: 10 YR 6/7 light brownish grey
Texture: ash 60%, silt 40%
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: 5% small salt flecks <1 mm, 5% charcoal flecks ,1 mm, 2% phytolith especially in NW
Post-depositional Features: salts
Basal Boundary: slightly sloped down to SE/distinct/anthropogenic
