Unit 8859
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: midden deposit - arbitrary layer

Dimensions: 7.20m (E-W) x 5.67m (N-S) x ? (thick) (FS 24.6.09)
Discussion: The arbitrary layer was first takem out in the SE part of the area in order to expose the surface below U. 8854, which comprised middeny material, unevenly distributed within the detected walls. This unit (8859) consisted mostly of middeny soil (remains of organic material mixed with ash and charcoal), with lenses of rubble. A number of fragmented animal bones, pottery sherds, obsidian pieces were found while dry sieving.
At the base of this unit a ''surface'' with grayish-reddish rubble was discovered, harder than the soil removed with this unit, so we decided to stop at that point. The unit will probably be continued westwards. The layer removed was about 10 cm thick. It does not differ very much from the unit previously removed (8854), which was above.
After removing U. 8854 from the W half of the excavated area, it was obvious that the midden continued deeper within the exposed mudbrick walls. In the N portio, attached to the N wall there is a layer (?) of reddish ''packing'' mixed with grayish soil. Underneath this layer there is a midden-like reddush-orange relatively hard csurface.
When this unit was removed from the currently excavated S part of sp. 226, a light reddish-yellow surface appeared in the central part of the W half, indicating a cut. Arround the supposed cut (W and S of it), it is still midden. As we approace the W wall, the midden becomes mixed with harder reddish rubble.
It was a prioirty unit. The results that we got as a feedback from the botany team indicate that it seems to be a middeny type deposit - sample representing daily dumping of food and oven rake outs. There were no traces indicating trampling activity.
The animal bones are heavily processed. There are few traces of burning on them. Probably at that time the space was not a walking area.
The pottery indicates most probably level V.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
