Discussion: This unit comprised the final two foundation courses of brick and mortar in the western wall (F3656) of space 40. The course was made up of three large (long) bricks with a slight difference in colour from the previous courses (U21303). The unit was excavated using a trowel and small pickaxe to remove large chunks. Doing so revealed the bricks of an older wider wall that we had seen poking out from underneath before we started excavating. We included the last course of mortar in this unit, because it was very compact, thin and hard to distinguish from the brick. In this case we failed to do so occasionally.
The last course of the foundation bricks was recognized a bit later in the course of the excavation. It abutted the older wall mentioned above. By some reasons the older wall was kept for foundation - with one new brick - to make a foundation course. Another was added to provide stability to this foundation probably.
