Unit 21365
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Ashy lens in wall collapse
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: This unit was recognized as a lens of ash and loose brown soil (layered and intermixed) below infill U21172 of space 40. The wall collapse u.21180 was surrounding it, and some of it seem to be below this unit. Presumably it might be a lens from the middenlike (?) contexts below but more probably a lens of ashy soil that was thrown in and became embedded and trampled down into part of the wall collapse as well as the midden-like (?) layers below in the southwestern part of space 40.
It was excavated with pickaxe, which went fast since the soil was soft. It was not sieved and also no finds were observed to be handpicked.
Consistency: Friable with trowel; soft but firm
Colour: Black and brown
Texture: Silt
Bedding: Layered
Inclusions: Charcoal
Post-depositional Features: Animal burrow (and one alive centipede!)
Basal Boundary: Diffuse
