Unit 22613
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: inter-wall infill
Data Category Information: Location: between walls; Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: This unit represents the fill put between the walls of B. 131 & B. 1 after construction. It contains a great deal of artifacts, including a substantial number of articulated animal bone (i.e. epiphyses and metapodials). The conflagration of B. 1 & B. 131 burned the layer severely. It was excavated by trowel and brush, and was extremely crumbly due not only to the degree of burning but also to its exposure since the excavation of B.1 in the 1990s. Extensive animal burrowing exacerbated its fragility as well, in addition to introducing some intrusive plastic material.
Consistency: soft, crumbly, and loose
Colour: orange and dark grey/black layers
Texture: silt and ash
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: bone, charcoal, ash
Post-depositional Features: extensive animal burrows; was exposed for a long time
Basal Boundary: clear-- came down on walls of B. 131 (f. 7707), u. 22602
