Unit 3751
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor(s)
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: mixed; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: up to 0.63 m N-S x 1.50 m E-W; approx. up to 0.05 m thick
Discussion: Layer consisting of many different 'floor' layers, overall greyish brown colour but different coloured bands visible on surface pre-ex and also in section during excavation. Have left an E-W section through unit for possible micromorphology and also N-S section because of N-S baulk. E edge of layer clear pre-exc. but not sure what would happen to W, but respected line of oven 252. Once excavated up to the baulk clear that the floor(s) lapped slightly over the white plaster rim at edge of the oven (3755). Layer presumably continues to W of baulk. Continues to N as (3763) and E as (3764) . Overall impression is of a series of 'dirty' floor layers/occupation deposits, some ashy, very thin. Layer thins and becomes generally more patchy to E, also thins to N. Presuambly associated with use of oven 252.
Recognition: Recognised during cleaning, fine layers of different material, clearly visible.
Definition: Clear to W, but uncertain to E pre-excavation, defined to N by grid.
Execution: Clayey silt.
Condition: Dry. Surface; smooth/flat but not surface of uppermost floor layer, instead cutting across floors.
Consistency: friable
Colour: 10 YR 5/2 greyish brown (dry) (overall colour)
Texture: clayey silt
Bedding: layered
Inclusions: occ. <2% small and medium bone frags; occ. >2% charcoal flecks
Post-depositional Features: c.10-15% salt flecks at basal boundary
Basal Boundary: abrupt/prominent/smooth/inclined moderately to W

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
