Unit 8869
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: midden deposit, midden layer - S part of sp. 226
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: U. 8869 comprises the next blocks of layers of midden deposits in the S part of sp. 226 (''the street''). This is more or less an arbitrary layer since the midden layers is impossible to trace out one by one. At this depth they tend to ''flatten out'' or ''level out'' with our arbitrary layer. This is visible in the W section of sp. 226 along the E 1050 line. In this part they also become much harder/compact so I believe it will be interesting to examine them for possible trampling traces (materialwise and a Wendy block). However the mid part of the unit remains to be typical middeny deposit with noticable transition to friable, ashy layers eastwards. S part of the unit, close to the S wall is mixed with construction rubble as well as with possible bricks, which we left in place since they might have something to do with shoring of the wall.
This unit was also prioritized and the specialists do not find traces of trampling. The priority tour feed-back evidences that this unit yeilded 4 times bigger amount of charcoal compared to U. 8864 and is generally considered to be a ''rich'' midden from botanical point of view. The faunal analyses also show richer taxa of animals and a badger among them. The bones are less processed, few traces of burning and digestion traces. The bones are getting larger (better preserved). Pottery still indicates level 5.
Recognition: a block of clayey and charcoal layers

Inclusions: animal bones, obsidian chips, pottery sherds, charcoal, flint chips, phytoliths
Post-depositional Features: rodent holes, plant roots
Basal Boundary: flat, arbitrary but close to actual layer since at this depth the layers tend to ''flatten out''
