Unit 20269
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: heterogeneous natural deposit
Data Category Information: Deposition: buried soil
Dimensions: 4 m x 6.5 m x 0.09 m
Discussion: This is a layer of slowly, naturally deposited heterogeneous layers. It contained a wide range of artifacts from a number of periods, including pottery tentatively dated as Bronze Age and some copper, as well as a stone bead. Removing this layer revealed the total extent of u. 20267 and u. 20221, two layers of redeposited mud-brick and construction material, as well as some pits in the NW corner-- along with the full reach of the ash and burning characterizing u. 20266 (which must have been the result of a fire postdating the Neolithic, since the ashy fill abuts our Roman/Hellenistic wall (f. 3951)
Recognition: continued fill deposit, bounded by features
Definition: bounded by clearly Neolithic features (burials and walls) and extent of trench
Execution: hoe, pick, trowel, no sieving
Condition: cool, shaded
Consistency: friable to firm
Colour: light greyish brown, with reddish and darker patches
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: ash, pottery, charcoal, stone bead, obsidian, bone, copper
Post-depositional Features: animal burrows
Basal Boundary: burnt layer to east, appearance of Neolithic features to West
