Unit 20271
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: heterogeneous natural deposit
Data Category Information: Deposition: buried soil
Dimensions: 10 m x 5.83 m x .30 m
Discussion: U. 20271 is yet another deposit of heterogeneous material. As it abuts the late wall f. 3951, and surrounds f. 3948, which is also a late wall, it is one of the latest units left in the trench at the end of the 2012 season and should be removed first in 2013.
2013: We have now excavated this unit. It consisted primarily of redeposited Roman construction material, from walls f. 3948, f.3984, and possibly also f. 3951. It was extremely ashy in many places, which makes sense given the burning observed to the south and east of walls f.3948 and f.3984. Excavating this unit made clear the extent of space 509.
