Unit 20938
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: midden
Data Category Information: Location: external; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: The midden was excavated in 2013 as an arbitrary layer that was reminiscent of similar deposits excavated in 2012 (19564, 20487, 20472). It was placed along the Southern part of the trench directly under the southern walls of sp. 489 (F. 3623, 3624). It was well noticeable at the beginning of the 2013 season that the midden was accumulated earlier than mentioned walls raised, and the dump deposit is restricted by wall F.2008 (-the northern wall of Sp.93, B52). The unit contained an abundance of organic inclusions, including areas with charcoal, and artefacts, especially animal bones, obsidian and clay ball fragments. Significant is a lack of pottery in the excavated deposit! Due to the accumulation process and dumping different kind of material during a time period, there were a number of layers evidenced. In the upper part of the unit there were e.g. several ashy sequences. And within the lower section the deposit was more friable and composed of different color clay lumps. The basal boundary of the midden was very sharp because the described above material covered completely rubble of in situ fallen wall (U.20942).
Consistency: loose and soft in upper part and friable in lower
Colour: multicoloured:mid/dark-grey, light-black, orange

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
