Unit 3241

Category: layer    dug in 1998

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: accumulated deposit

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple

Dimensions: 0.85 m N-S x 1.02 m E-W x 0.04-0.1 m

Discussion: (3241) is soil right above a trampled surface (3253). Divided in 4 parts with baulks left between them (the other numbers being:3242,3243,3228).
The x-find (a stone) seems to have been lying on the surface, and it made a dent in the surface, probably when a part of the W wall (3239,3240) fell or was pulled down.

In places there is no soil between the lower surface (328?) and the horizontal wall (3239+3240) which means that (3241) is missing there. This concerns the S end of the wall only (see graphic no 98-172).

NB Micromorphology. sample S4 taken in baulk between (3241/3242). Material in baulk dry sieved as (3242).

Recognition: Darker than soil above.

Definition: Clearly defined from soil above/under.

Execution: Excavated with trowel, divided, leaving baulks.

Condition: Moist.

Consistency: firm

Colour: 10 YR 3/4 dark yellowish brown

Texture: clay and silty clay (clay towards bottom)

Bedding: massive, but maybe a little layered at bottom

Inclusions: charcoal 5%, white siliceous plant remians at bottom

Post-depositional Features: animal holes, salts

Basal Boundary: the surface below seems trampled, sharp distinctness, distinct contrast, smooth surface, flat
