Unit 3727
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Brick
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 2.89m N-S x 0.31m E-W x c.0.05m thick
Discussion: Wall 267, West wall of space 112, the brick layers are well defined and reasonably easy to follow. Bricks between 0.50 - 1.00 m long and generally c. 6cm thick. Due to hard weathering (wall exposed during 97/98) the bricks and mortar are dry and crumbly and are easily excavated, layers come off easily and quite often complete bricks can lifted off the wall structure. Salt and some roots between layers defines mudbrick layers also. Mid-section of wall unclear, some difficulty distinguishing bricks (see plan 98/530). c. 1/2 way down bricks change colour, richer and darker yellowish brown, but possibly due to moisture and less exposure.
Recognition: Colour and texture change between brick and mortar.
Definition: In wall 267, distinctive layers of brick and mortar.
Execution: Trowel and handpick.
Condition: Dry and crumbly.
Consistency: Loose.
Colour: 10YR 6/4 light yellowish brown and 10YR 5/6 yellowish brown.
Texture: Fine silty clay.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: Very few bone fragments and few flecks of charcoal, both <2%.
Post-depositional Features: Some root activity (mainly between brick and mortar), salt and insect holes.
Basal Boundary: Anthropogenic, distinctive, flat.
