Discussion: Fairly thin (c. 3-4 cm) layers of light grey and lumpy mortar with small amounts of charcoal and phytoliths, hardly any sieve finds. Quite even layers and reasonably easy to follow and to excavate, even if very firm in places. But unclear in mid-section of wall (see 98/530)
Brick and mortar placed in 'steps' to accommodate the slope (N-S).
Recognition: Clolour and texture change from brick, more lumpy.
Definition: Distinctive layers within wall 267.
Execution: Trowel and handpick.
Condition: Dry and moderately hard.
Consistency: Moderately hard to firm.
Colour: 10YR 7/2 Light gray.
Texture: Silty clay.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: Phytolith <2%, charcoal flecks <1%
Post-depositional Features: Salt and insect activity between mortar and bricks, some insect holes.
Basal Boundary: Anthropogenic, flat, distinctive between layers (brick and mortar).
