Discussion: 4986 was an ash and charcoal rich deposit which lay in a cut 4999 above a floor surface 5090 in the south east coner of building 23/ space 178. The charcoal/ ash rich deposit seems to relate to some sort of burning activity. It was also associated with a cluster of large bones including two scapulae. Similar deposits have been found in other buildings in the vicinity of ovens. Perhaps this represents the final use of these scapula to rake out ashy waste from the contemporary ovens, after which they were deposited beneath the subsequent floors?
