Description: Cluster of two large scapulae and several other lagre animal bones in an ashy deposit (4986).

Discussion: 4993 was a cluster of three large bones which lay in an ashy deposit (4986) in a cut (4999) above a floor (5090) in the south east corner of space 178/ building 23. Similar deposits of large scapulae close by to ovens have been found in other buildings that have been excavated although the purpose of these deposits is still unclear. One idea is that the scapulae were used to sweep the ashy rake-out from the ovens. This deposit could represent the product of one such event, after which the scapulae and oven waste were placed in a cut to maintain a smooth surface on which to place the subsequent floor surfaces.

Unit description: Dirty area in SE corner of Building 23. Next to series of ovens with lots of obsidian hoards. NOT analyzed, but two scapulae laid directly on top of each other were X-finded. Both were complete in ground but were in dozens of pieces by the time they reached the lab. X1 appeared in two different pieces, one with glenoid. Assume these are the same scapula? The glenoid of X3 didn’t make it. Some field measurements were taken when the bones were partially exposed (in priority book) but they were lifted before complete measurements could be taken.
