Discussion: Distinct cut at Northern edge beneath 1532, visible in section with uneven edge meeting the western extent of space 107 at the interface between 'the wall' and 'the gap'. The fill peeled clearly from this surface, although its basal boundary was hard to establish. At its Southern edge, the fill appears to respect another surface, thought to be a wall, which the lower layers of charcoal/ash midden material slope up towards. Across the extent of the cut, the basal boundary is unclear. It is possibly cut in following the surface of the midden layer defining it in section. The base at the western side of the cut was overcut, but in the unexcavated section, this was not apparent, so we are still unsure of the relations of the cut to the material beneath. Though the material below slopes down from East to West, it cannot be assumed that the cut does the same. However, the break of slope at the Northern edge was sharp, its side vertical and edge irregular. The fill excavated in the Northern half was variable and layered [1544], on the Southern half the fill was removed (as far as possible), layer by layer. including 1593, 1601, 1606 (and 1609 same of which may be beneath the cut)

The cut to the North was clear pre-excavation and during excavation although its possible that it was overdug, perhaps because the edge was made deeper by root action. To the south the fill respected wall 77. Quite what this represents is unclear. It is mid-construction of space 107, this because it cut cut[1605]. Does it represent a consolidation area for the space or a cut for midden to make mortar for the bricks?

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
