Date: 8/6/1998
Entry: 6th August. I’ve been trying to sort out the plastered moulded feature on the north side of the crawlhole, now called feature 279, and it still isn’t clear what’s going on! Two or three days ago I did take off the orange-brown curved bit (3150) at the n... click here for more...

Date: 8/8/1998
Entry: 8th August. I thought that after doing practically nothing yesterday everything would be easy today - but this is Catalhoyuk! I decided to take out the deposit south of F279, the big moulding, to try to release it from that side, but it proved to be imp... click here for more...

Name: Naomi Hamilton
Team: Çatal
Date: 8/9/1998
Entry: 9th August. Today F279 looks less like a bin, far less like a wall, and more like a moulding! Still haven't finished it. It's pretty tricky taking these layers off, and then having to keep them untouched and shovel them into an envelope makes work slow... click here for more...

Name: Naomi Hamilton
Team: Çatal
Date: 8/11/1998
Entry: 11th August. Still not finished. Yesterday I didn't work because I couldn't balance for some reason, so wasn't safe on the trench. Today I got back to F279. Much of the stratigraphy is circular - everything is over what it is also under. I discussed ... click here for more...

Name: Naomi Hamilton
Team: Çatal
Date: 8/15/1998
Entry: 15th August. We had a three day holiday, hence no work for a while. Despite the reason, it is dispiriting to find F279 still waiting for me. I decided to take out 2872, the plaster 'thing' on the south of the crawlhole, as this would make the space loo... click here for more...

Name: Naomi Hamilton
Team: Çatal
Date: 8/16/1998
Entry: 16th August. In obedient attempt to get fully well I didn't work in the trench until the afternoon. However, I had a long-overdue session with the paperwork. A set of levels I'd taken for profiles of F279 had been peculiar at the time, but I thought I ... click here for more...

Name: Naomi Hamilton
Team: Çatal
Date: 8/17/1998
Entry: 17th August. Today I realised how ill I had been over the past few days, as I felt well! What a difference it makes in approaching the archaeology. However, all is not solved yet. Not only was much of the space dug out of phase or in partial units las... click here for more...

Date: 8/18/1998
Entry: 18th August. Well, I removed the marl as 3386, and as usual it turned into two layers! - the top one is 3386, which overlies a brown deposit over a lower marl/plaster layer which may be the ultimate core of the whole feature. It may join with the big ch... click here for more...

Name: Naomi Hamilton
Team: Çatal
Date: 8/19/1998
Entry: 19th August. It never is as simple as it seems. The lower chunk of 3394 turned out to curve down to the north, with 3300 running underneath as well as up the side, so this does seem to be part of 3394, not a separate brickette of the same matrix. The l... click here for more...

Name: Naomi Hamilton
Team: Çatal
Date: 8/22/1998
Entry: 22nd August. F279 is changing! I took off a white marly skim - as I thought - from the south edge, only to find that it cleaned off a curved edge of an interior semi-circular marl 'thing' with a flat top - almost like a platform of some kind. There see... click here for more...
