Unit 2761
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: South
Data Category Information: Description: penning; Deposition: heterogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: 1.00 m 1.00 m x 0.14 m deep (max)
Discussion: Dump deposit rather than floor surface, some of orange/yellow deposit , 2024, appears over this deposit. But only patchy and sparse. Up against wall amount of plaster increases, presumably from wall collapse.
This appears to be a pre- 2024 dump, (second thoughts; although 2024 appears to run over this dump it may be part of same deposit as the orange/yellow organic deposit is much more apparent in adjacent square to north (2765) and this is most likely the same deposit as 2761. Slope down from south to north becoming much thicker in north.
Execution: trowel

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Part of orange deposit over floor in space 117. Small unit, but with several large pieces, most of which are X finds; much more on floor than in House 1. About evenly divided between sheep-size and large mammal. A few pieces of cattle distal long bones, otherwise very little long bone. Ribs, vertebrae, and skull represented in fairly even proportions, except large mammal skull represented only by a piece of horn core. Little burning, some digestion. In addition to distal long bones, also 35 mm segment of large mammal rib, and most of thoracic vertebra. Cuts on at least 1 rib (carving) and distal humerus (filleting). X5 is an originally complete and apparently usable bone point. Generally good condition, but some (not all) of large pieces rather soft. Seems like mirror of units like 1506, which are heavy on long bones. is the debris from marrow processing being dumped separately, at least in some instances? One could see the big bones as a special deposit, exposed longer than the rest; part of the deposits at the base of 1873, which overlies this? We should look at the big pieces from these floor units and 1873 together. Roddy says the bones were coming especially from the top of the unit (ca. 12 cm deep). If we subtract the big bones, we have mostly sheep-size animals, perhaps daily post-consumption discard, plus some dog feces. Sheep-size long bones are almost entirely absent, though. 4mm, flotation sample #2 was recorded for diagnostics only anfd contained one piece of worked bone.
