Discussion: Small block of ashy grey material below (3920) to SW of oven F.269. Originally seen up to baulk but once baulk removed seem to continue westwards to next square + seem to be same as (3929) in that square (drawn up to this point). Also appears to be same as ashy grey material (3913) to N of F.293. Possibly rake out from ovens, subsequently employed as floor make up.

Unit description: Bird bone only pulled from Sample 2 >4mm flotation, 100% sorted. Not recorded otherwise, but the remainder consists of two bits of somewhat worn sheep-size bone. These accord with the unit sheet description as packing. However the bird bone consists of a very fresh distal tarsometatarsus with articulating vestigial MT1. To find these still articulated suggests primary deposition of this piece. Either caught up from the floor or sweepings in the packing, or conceivably deliberately placed. I would want to see a pattern of crow or bird bits or other offerings under ovens before being convinced of that, though.
