Data Category Information: Location: floors; Material: obsidian; Deposition: primary deposition; Basal Spit: stone
Dimensions: 0.12 (E-W), 0.10m (N-S), 0.05m deep
Description: A cluster of fifty obsidian flakes and cores within the matrix of the floor layers contained in unit 4987. It sat as a tight cluster of flakes that were distinct from the surrounding material rather than being scattered amoungst it. There were also two pieces of burnt bone and a small stone amoungst the obsidian.
Discussion: 4989 was a discrete deposit of 50 obsidian flakes, a couple of pieces of burnt bone and a stone that were held within the matrix of the dirty floor layers contained within unit 4987 in the south east corner of building 23/ space 178. The deposit included a mixture of cores and flakes, (some of which re-fitted) and appears to be related to some sort of in-situ obsidian working. It is interesting that it did not appear to have been deposited in a separate cut, but rather lay within the floors on which the obsidian was worked. The obsidian that was scattered over the surrounding floors was retrieved separately but on closer inspection may also relate to that contined within this deposit. It could simply represent the scraped up pile of the largest waste that was produced from a bout of obsidian working in the area that was left in a holow in the floors.
